tipoff — Privacy policy
Privacy policy
tipoff is a khata-book style app for tracking who owes you money and who you owe — credits, debits, dues, and payment reminders, organized by customer and business profile. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and the choices you have. It covers the tipoff mobile and web app only.

01 · What we collect
We collect only what's needed to run your ledgers and keep them synced to your account.
| Data | Collected when | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Phone number | You sign in or sign up | Verifies your identity via a one-time SMS code and serves as your account login |
| Profile details | You set up a business or personal profile | Personalizes the app and appears on the records you create within that profile |
| MPIN | You set your app passcode | Stored only as a one-way cryptographic hash, to protect quick re-entry to your account |
| Customer & transaction records | You add a customer, credit, or debit entry | This is the ledger data tipoff exists to store and sync for you |
| Language & currency preference | You choose them in settings | Displays the app and your amounts the way you prefer |
| Device notification token | tipoff schedules a reminder | Delivers your private Credit reminders to this device at the right time |
The names, phone numbers, and amounts you enter for your own customers are your business records — we store them so they sync across your sessions and don't use them for anything beyond providing the app to you.
02 · Third-party services
tipoff is built on a small set of infrastructure providers, each handling a specific part of the app:
Each provider only receives the data it needs to perform its role. We don't share your data with anyone else for their own marketing purposes.
03 · How we use your information
Running the app: signing you in, syncing your profiles and ledgers, and calculating balances and totals.
Reminders: sending a due-date nudge — to your customer over WhatsApp for a Debit they owe, or to you as a local notification for a Credit you’re tracking.
We do not sell your data, and we do not use your customers’ ledger data for advertising or to train any model.
04 · How Debit reminders use WhatsApp
When you set a reminder on a Debit entry, tipoff shares the customer’s phone number along with the amount owed and due date with Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform, so it can deliver a reminder message to that customer on your behalf, in your chosen language.
This only happens for Debit reminders you actively create. Credit reminders are private — they never leave your device.
05 · Advertising
tipoff is ad-supported, using Google AdMob for banner and interstitial ads. There is no subscription or in-app purchase.
If you’re in a region covered by GDPR or UK data-protection law, you’ll be shown a consent form the first time you open the app, and can review or change your ad-consent choices at any time from Privacy Options on the Profile page.
AdMob may use device identifiers (such as your advertising ID) to serve and measure ads. tipoff does not use any separate analytics or crash-tracking SDK beyond this.
06 · Retention & deletion
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active, so your ledgers stay available across sessions and devices.
Deleting a customer, transaction, or profile removes it immediately and permanently. Deleting your account — from Delete Account in the drawer or Profile page — permanently erases your account and every profile, customer, and transaction under it. This can’t be undone.
07 · Security
Your data is stored on Google Cloud infrastructure via Firebase, under security rules that restrict every account to reading and writing only its own data — everything else is denied by default.
Sign-in is protected by one-time phone verification and your app-level MPIN, which is verified server-side by comparing hashes — it is never transmitted, compared, or stored as plain text at any point. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we follow industry-standard practices to protect your information.
08 · Permissions tipoff may request
Contacts — requested only if you choose to pick a customer from your phone’s contacts; used to fill in a name and number for that customer, never uploaded or scanned in bulk.
Notifications — used to deliver your local Credit reminders and reminder-due alerts.
09 · Children's privacy
tipoff is a business and personal finance tool intended for general audiences and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13; if you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we’ll remove it.
10 · Your choices & rights
Access & correction: everything you’ve entered is visible and editable directly in the app.
Ad preferences: manage consent and personalization from Profile → Privacy Options.
Notifications: local reminder notifications can be disabled from your device’s system settings.
Deletion: delete individual records any time, or your entire account from Profile → Delete Account.
If you’re in a region with additional statutory rights (such as the EEA/UK or California), those rights apply to you as provided by law, and the mechanisms above are how you exercise most of them directly in-app.
11 · Changes to this policy
If we make a material change to this policy, we’ll update the effective date and version above and, where required, notify you in the app before the change takes effect.
